Southern Vectis 516 - DL 9706

Restoration 1989 - 2016

The process of restoring this vehicle to original condition was slow, laborious and (most of all) expensive. Initial attention was to the mechanical units. During the 1990's the engine was overhauled and rebuilt , and many other mechanical parts renovated. At the same time, of course, the condition of the body deteriorated!

Unfortunately, during this time a number of crucial items including the sump and gearbox werestolen whilst not on the vehicle, and replacements were difficult to source. Two scrap bus and one lorry chassis have contributed to the rebuild.

This picture shows mechanical work under way during the 1990's.

516 under repair

In July 2001, work commenced on the reconstruction of the body framing - the view shows the bus with various panels removed. The roof has been shored-up from within to prevent collapse whilst the side pillars are replaced.

A start is made on the body restoration

This picture, taken in November 2004, shows panelling being fitted to the new framing. Everything, apart from the front bulkhead and the entrance door has been renewed. An old radiator has temporarily been refitted to ensure all fits well. The side panels have been prepared, but are not being fitted owing to the risk of damage in the confines of the workshop.
